Expiation
Posted on Jan 31st, 2023
The ancient Roman festival for atonement was the inspiration for naming this second month, February. Purging guilt was the theme for those in ages past. Here, at Four Seasons at Elm Tree, many of us already have decided to purge old habits and resolve new ones for the new year, 2023. Even the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit in January had many doing much the same thing.
Last month also had us catching up after holiday activities, cleaning our houses, reorganizing our new calendars. February is the shortest month, but it’s filled with many celebrations, often using and wearing red! How many of us will do so at the Caring Hearts Dinner mid-month? Or at yoga, Bingo, Ladies’ and Men’s Luncheons? Special Valentines will be received from loved ones, roses delivered, dining out enjoyed. Memories are recalled from school days when each important president had his holiday with a day home from classes! And, the groundhog was fun to watch, learning what spring might do. Perhaps snow days will be coming soon?
With weeks of grey days and damp weather, we can take advantage of some rest in our busy lives, so necessary for good physical and mental health. Filipinos have their idlip or nap each afternoon; Thais tell you sabai, sabai, or take it easy; Kenyans have their morning chai as a break from work. Americans must learn to relax amidst their productivity, calm their minds and let their bodies rest, as the rest of the world seems to know so well.
